As single females, Peggy and Jane attracted the attention of European men on their travels. Some were kind and gentlemanly, others were more amorous. But one young man in particular was completely love struck when he met Peggy.
This encounter happened in France in 1954. Peggy and Jane were with a group of fellow travellers enjoying a day at the beach. All the while one of the boys was falling silently in love, a fact Peggy did not learn until she received the following letter which she has kept with her photos and mementos of her travels.
Peggy never followed up on this proposal – lucky for me, as she met a dashing young man from England who would eventually become her husband, and my father, a few years later whilst travelling in Spain.
